Foxtailing Cannabis Buds

Foxtailing is when a cannabis cola grows new bud tips out the top mid-flower, creating a fox-tail shape. Usually it's stress, occasionally genetics.

What it looks like

  • New bud formations sprouting from mature buds
  • Colas look spindly, airy, uneven
  • Reduced density and weight compared to normal buds

Quick diagnostic checks

1Cool the tent and raise the light
2Foxtailed buds are still usable, just less dense

Causes ranked by likelihood

1. Heat stress

Most common

Signs

  • Tent consistently above 82°F
  • Top colas closest to light affected

Fix

  • Lower temp below 80°F
  • Better ventilation
  • Raise/dim light

2. Light burn

Common

Signs

  • Top buds bleached or yellow
  • LED too close or too strong

Fix

  • Raise light 6+ inches
  • Dim if possible

3. Genetics (some strains naturally foxtail)

Possible

Signs

  • Sativa-dominant or landrace strain
  • Temps and light in normal range

Fix

  • Not much to do — accept it as a strain trait

⚠️When to worry

Foxtailing usually starts in week 4-6 of flower. Left unfixed costs 20-30% yield.
