Cannabis Overwatering

Overwatering is the single most common beginner mistake. The plant can't get oxygen to its roots, so it drowns — even though it looks like it needs water.

What it looks like

  • Leaves droop DOWNWARD (look sad)
  • Leaves feel thick, waxy, heavy
  • Soil stays wet for 3+ days after watering
  • Slow growth
  • Yellowing (root stress prevents nutrient uptake)

Quick diagnostic checks

1Stop watering — seriously, just wait
2Lift test before every watering
3Fabric pots fix 90% of overwatering issues

Causes ranked by likelihood

1. Watering too frequently

Most common

Signs

  • Watering on a schedule instead of by soil dryness
  • Small plants in big pots (pot stays wet too long)

Fix

  • Use the LIFT TEST: pick up the pot. Heavy = wet, light = time to water
  • In a proper-sized pot, water when top 2 inches are dry
  • Let soil dry between watering — roots need oxygen cycles

2. Poor drainage

Common

Signs

  • Pot has few drainage holes
  • Saucer holds water under the pot

Fix

  • Switch to fabric pots — drains and aerates automatically
  • Drill more drainage holes
  • Dump saucers after watering

3. Pot too big for plant size

Common

Signs

  • Small seedling in a 5-gallon pot
  • Roots haven't filled the pot

Fix

  • Upgrade pot sizes gradually: solo cup → 1 gal → 3 gal → 5+ gal
  • Water in a small ring around the stem (not the whole pot) until roots spread

⚠️When to worry

Overwatering can progress to root rot in 5-7 days. If leaves stay droopy after the soil dries out, check roots for rot.
