Clawing Cannabis Leaves

When cannabis leaves curl tip-down into a claw shape, you're usually overfeeding nitrogen. Sometimes it's overwatering.

What it looks like

  • Leaf tips curl DOWN into a claw
  • Leaves are dark green, almost black
  • Affects upper leaves first

Quick diagnostic checks

1Flush if feed is strong
2Let soil dry if overwatered
3If you're in flower, stop using veg nutes

Causes ranked by likelihood

1. Nitrogen toxicity

Most common

Signs

  • Leaves dark green-to-black
  • High-N feed recently
  • Veg-strength nutes into flower

Fix

  • Flush with 3x pot volume of pH'd plain water
  • Switch to lower-N bloom nutes
  • Wait for new growth to come in lighter green

2. Overwatering

Common

Signs

  • Soil wet
  • Pot heavy
  • Leaves droopy AND clawing

Fix

  • Let soil dry completely
  • Lift test before watering

⚠️When to worry

Clawing in flower is bad — it's eating into yield. Fix within a few days.
