Purple Stems on Cannabis Plants

Purple stems can be normal genetics, an early sign of phosphorus deficiency, or cold stress. Location and age of the plant tell you which.

What it looks like

  • Purple or magenta coloring on the main stem or branches
  • May extend onto leaf petioles (the stalks that hold leaves)
  • Often combined with other symptoms like slow growth or leaf issues

Quick diagnostic checks

1If the plant is otherwise healthy, it's probably genetics — relax
2If purple appeared suddenly with cold weather, warm the space
3If you see other P deficiency signs, switch to bloom nutes

Causes ranked by likelihood

1. Genetics (normal)

Most common

Signs

  • Plant is otherwise healthy — growing fast, green leaves
  • Strain is known for purple traits (most indica-dominant strains)
  • Purple color is uniform, not patchy

Fix

  • Nothing to fix — this is genetic expression
  • Many purple-stemmed strains produce purple buds in cold finish

2. Phosphorus deficiency

Common

Signs

  • Purple stems AND purple/bronze leaf tips
  • Lower leaves turning dark blue-green then purple
  • Slow growth, small leaves

Fix

  • Switch to a bloom nutrient with higher P (FoxFarm Tiger Bloom, GH Flora Bloom)
  • Check pH — P locks out below 6.0 in soil
  • Add bat guano or bone meal to soil for slow-release P

3. Cold temperatures

Common

Signs

  • Purple developed quickly after a cold night
  • Plant looks "tight" with short internodes
  • Temps dropped below 60°F

Fix

  • Keep tent above 65°F minimum at night
  • Insulate outdoor pots or bring plants inside for cold snaps
  • Add a small ceramic heater if needed

⚠️When to worry

Purple stems alone are almost never serious. Combined with yellowing, stunted growth, or leaf damage — then it's a deficiency to fix.
